What to Do in a Dental Emergency

If you need advice on what to do before you can get in for your appointment, there are some common ways to begin handling your dental emergency straightaway.

  • Broken crown, bridge or veneer:  Retrieve the broken restoration or veneer so that it has the best possible chance of being reapplied. It can be gently cleaned with saliva or milk. If it’ a crown, put it back in place over your tooth.
  • Knocked-out tooth:  A sporting injury is a common reason that teeth are damaged. If you have had a sporting injury or another type of impact that has caused a tooth to fall out, rinse it with saliva or milk. Then, you can place it back in the socket. Be careful to avoid touching the roots of the tooth, as it can damage these delicate structures.
  • Toothache:  Many people have experienced pain in a tooth. It may be an indication of an infection or abscess, so it should not be ignored. A cold compress applied to the outside of the cheek near the site of the pain may help bring down the inflammation. You can take an over-the-counter medication for the pain and rinse your mouth out with saltwater.
